TAWAU (Bernama) -- The Initiative 1206 radar surveillance system installed at various locations in the east coast of Sabah would be upgraded while new radars would be placed along the 1,400-kilometer Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (ESSZONE), said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the new radars would be installed at strategic locations, depending on the requirements of the Malaysian Armed Forces, Royal Malaysia Police and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

On the fate of the Joint Task Force 2 (ATB 2) following the establishment of the ESSCOM and ESSZONE, he said it would not be dissolved.

"ATB 2 will coordinate with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) to implement the responsibilities of the ESSZONE," he said during a gathering with armed forces personnel at Kubota Camp, here today.

Ahmad Zahid said the zone's support logistics and assets would be enhanced in line with its wider scope of responsibility.
